Azerbaijan, perhaps? The words look similar.

Well, Dorian, I'm assuming you type as well as I do and mean country, not county. And Azeri does not refer to a particular people, but a language of Turkic origin. Today there are 32 million speakers in Iran, 8 million in Azerbaijan, and 6 million in Georgia and Russian Dagestan. This is a very interesting page and well worth reading:

Azeri

Very very close. It is true that the natives of Azerbaijan are called Azeri, but the country is not the home of the most Azeri.

( I LOVE that thumb!)

Caveman, I was answering when you posted. I have read several sources using 'Azeri' as a noun for the natives of Azerbaijan, along with Azerbaijani. You named the answer I was looking for. Iran's population of just over 66 million is 24% Azerbaijani, according to Time Alamanac 2003. Azerbaijan, according to the Almanac, has a population of about 8 million. Thus, there are more in Iran. Your figure of 32 million speakers of Azeri is certainly possible, when one allows for bilingual Iranians. And yes, I did mean country. Sorry.

But Fuse still gets the thumb because I so rarely get to give it to him.

DG, so what is the population of most of Azerbaijan? I'm thinking its mostly Kurdish.

Azerbaijan's population of about 7.8 million is 90-92% Azeri, according to Time Almanac 2003, and the CIA World Factbook. " Despite a 1994 cease-fire, Azerbaijan has yet to resolve its conflict with Armenia over the Azerbaijani Nagorno-Karabakh enclave (largely Armenian populated)."

"There is an estimated 200,000 Kurds (2.8% of population) in the Republic of Azerbaijan (SOURCE: KHRP Report, Kurds in the former Soviet Union - November 1996)." - Kurdish Human Rights Project
