The Titanic had a total of 20 lifeboats. 14 were wooden and had a capacity of 65 people. 2 were wood cutters with a capacity of 40 people. And 4 were collapsibles with wood bottoms and canvas sides and could carry 47 people. Total capacity for all lifeboats was 1,178.
The Titanic actually exceeded the number of lifeboats required by the Board of Trade at the time. However, it was designed for 48 lifeboats. White Star Line considered passenger comfort more important and they thought if they included all those lifeboats the decks would be too crowded for comfort.
