It is further documented that, in 1716, William Levingston erected a playhouse in Williamsburg, the earliest known theatre in the British colonies. - LibraryVirginia.edu-------- They're being very careful with their claim. Notice that the claim is "earliest known" "in the British colonies." I have to wonder if there were any French or Spanish theaters in what is now the US. St. Augustine, founded by Spain, is several decades older that any British-founded city.
