Hmmm... seems like it was either two dollars or fourteen dollars if I am recalling my history lesson correctly.

My understanding was that it was $24.00 worth. I have also heard that the "Native" Americans from whom the purchase was made were not native to that region. They were just passing through.

I'm thinking the amount is more like twenty four dollars.

Several years ago, an analysis claimed that the Native Americans could buy it back had the money been invested at an annual return of 7% for the intervening years (1626 - present). Such an investment would have grown to over $3 trillion. And at 8%? Over $100 trillion!

Caveman2 is correct. Minuit bought it from the Canarsie, an Algonquian tribe who lived on what is now Long Island and just happened to be in the area (now called Masnhattan), probably trading with another group of Native Americans. They didn't even have squatter's rights to the land. - DG
