What cards was Wild Bill Hickok holding when he played his last hand in Deadwood's no. 10 Saloon?

Pair of aces, pair of eights, and a nine.

Two pair, Aces and eights with a Queen high. Now known as the "dead man's hand" (aces & 8's). Also found one source that says he had a nine of diamonds instead of the Queen.

Although your hand beats mine, Kwll, I have found that the fifth card is generally not known for certain.

Does anyone know which Aces and which Eights he was holding? If so, please show a reference. Thanks.

My link limits it to black in both cases, but the actual suite

Actually Dorian mine just says black aces and eights. My source was this issue of midwest travel magazine. And also mine said he was holding a Jack of diamonds too. Roll Eyes

I've done a considerable amout of research on this, and the black Aces nd Eights is almost universally accepted, but the fifth card is more often than not unknown. - DG
