It was something to do with the names of the wives of the Kings of Ireland at the time ,but I don't know for how long it was called Eire.

In 1936 Irish Prime Minister Eammon de Valera drew up a new constitution which was to replace the one originally drawn up after the forming of the Free State in 1922,among many important amendments was the clause that the Irish Free State was to be renamed Eire.It was put to a referendum which was narrowly accepted by the people in 1937.

Re: De Valera's Birth name

He was sometimes called Edward Coll after his mothers maiden name (his father was Spanish)

quote: in Ireland he was known as Edward Coll and as a young man he reverted to his Irish/Spanish identity with Eamon de Valera, a name which incidentally proved a major asset in fixing him in the public mind after the Easter Rebellion of 1916.

Sorry, didn't read all the question!
On Easter Monday, April 18, 1949 Eire became the Republic of Ireland. So that makes it 12 years.
de Valera's birth name was Edward De Valeros.
