Charlemagne's character was contradictory. In an age when the usual penalty for defeat was death, Charlemagne several times spared the lives of his defeated foes; yet in 782 at Verden, after a Saxon uprising, he ordered 4,500 Saxons beheaded.
Unless I am mistaken, Charlemagne is also known as Charles the Great, Carolus Magnus, Karolus Magnus, Karl der Große, Karl der Grosse, Karl the Great, Karol the Great, Karel de Grote, Carlomagno, and probably a few other names. He probably had a Kyril or a Cyril in there with the other names. The Slavic name for "king" is krol or a variation of that ( krajl, kral, etc.) (When you transliterate, spelling gets iffy.), no doubt coming from the Germanic "Karl".
