What was the first British ship to be sunk in the second world war. Where was it bound?

The first ship to be sunk in the second world war was the Cunarder 'Athenia' Bound from Liverpool to Montreal, she was torpedoed without warning on the night of September 3rd 1939 when 200 miles west of the Hebrides , off the coast of Scotland. 1400 people died including 14 Americans.
