This Civil War General was given sobriquets for different battles in the the Alabama- Tennessee area, one was "the Rock" and the other was "The Hammer" with battle names following each. Who was he?

That would be General George Thomas. The Rock was for Chickamauga and The Hammer was Nashville.

Thank you. I might not have know that answer if I hadn't been in TN to take pictures of the Chickamauga museum for the front cover of the TN phonebooks. While there I did tour the museum and learned more than I cared to about the Civil War!
