Known as Mum Bett, she was a slave who won her freedom in the case of Brom & Bett v Ashley around 1780, and the first black freed under The Massachusettes constitution.

There is an Elizabeth Freeman Center in Massachusetts. It offers many domestic violence services for battered women and their children.
