The Indianapolis; The Indianapolis was sunk by a Japanese submarine on July 30, 1945. Of the 1196 crew members on board, only 316 men survived a four-day ordeal afloat in the Philippine Sea, ravaged by sharks, dehydration, sunstroke, hypothermia, salt poisoning and a deadly oil slick from their own ship.
