Under the rule of Liutprand, Liutprand attempted to conquer all of Italy. This had adverse effects for the Lombards, leading to numerous wars with the Byzantines, the papacy, and finally the Franks. At the end of Liutprand's rule in 744, the Lombards were defeated by Charlemagne.
