Each year since 1935, this city has hosted a Founder's Day Celebration on the campus of what university to commemorate the birth of AA? +++++++++++++++++ 06-09-04, 08:16 PM Jelp01 The University of Akron, Akron, OH.
06-09-04, 08:19 PM Leppi Yup! and I'm "supposed" to be taking my final this friday when the Celebration starts. Only 35,000 extra people on campus last year, and more expected this year. I'll let you know how it went next week.
06-09-04, 11:25 PM DorianGreyed Ah, an AA convention! Think of the wild parties, the late-night carousing, carbonated grape juice corks flying through the air! I certainly hope Akron's retailers have laid in an extra supply of bottled water!
06-10-04, 07:58 AM Leppi DG, actually it's coffee. I saw them unloading almost a truckload of coffee cups and when I asked what it was for, AA convention. And they said all the cups they had still were probably not going to be enough.
06-10-04, 11:00 AM DorianGreyed Trust me, Leppi, I know about the coffee. I wonder if most of them still smoke.
06-10-04, 11:31 AM Leppi Well, I'll let you know tomorrow! Already there are golf carts driving around everywhere, tons and tons of juice and soda stands, and to make matters worse, there is construction all over the place and half the sidewalks are closed.
06-10-04, 05:31 PM FredPuli Riotous parties? That's exactly the strangest fear that alcoholics get about sobriety. We can't imagine enjoying ourselves without booze; believe me, nobody quite understood how muslims could enjoy themselves so much (even though they are permitted cannabis they never seem to use it and never seemed high )
In the years I've been at AA meetings the coffee consumption has been astronomical but the smoking has declined, just as it has in the 'normal' world. The coffee consumption of the individual declines with their longer sobriety. It's highest in the early times.Apart from the lift it gives we don't know how to talk or think unless we are holding a drink in our hands Big Grin
You should look out for sugar barrels too; alcoholics take enormous amounts of sugar in their coffee or tea, at least in the early years, and are fond of sodas. Alcohol is made from sugar so it may be that the body feels comforted by it in some way.
06-10-04, 08:47 PM DorianGreyed Not liking coffee back then, I found that both Coca Cola and ice cream did the sugar trick for me.
06-11-04, 08:40 AM Leppi Everyone who goes to the school got this e-mail from the university.

Due to construction, attendees may ask students for directions to the buildings. We will have guides on campus and in golf carts to assist the lost and handicapped, but with so many guests, please know that your kind words and help are appreciated.
For further information, contact Workforce Development and Continuing Education.
Now, the sidewalks are about halfway blocked because of the construction, and now to add on top of it, they have put concession stands on BOTH SIDES of the side walk! GEEZ! where is a person supposed to walk around here?
