The first Christmas Mass in the Philippines was celebrated at Pangasinan, which is on the west coast of the island of Luzon.

According to records, it took place sometime between 1280 and 1320. Brother Odoric, a monk from Italy, had been travelling in the Far East, and on his way back to his homeland, visited Luzon.
Legend says that at Pangasinan he and his followers met hostile natives:

..the natives soon gained confidence in the strangers because they realized that they did not intend to harm them. Brother Odoric showed pictures of Mary, Joseph and the Christ Child to the natives. Next to the black cross, that the Italians had fixed at the coast, they planted a "Christmas tree". On their knees Brother Odoric and his companions celebrated the first Christmas mass on the Philippines.
