In Victorian England, around Christmas time, the turkeys were walked to market. They wore boots to protect their feet from the frozen mud of the road. Boots were not used for geese: instead what was used?

Tar, I expect.

The turkeys were walked from Norfolk. That's one heck of a walk (the south of the county, the nearest part to London, is 100 miles away). That says something about their value at market. The practice was going on from the late C16.
