I wouldn't think otherwise. When I got that absurd letter from Dixon's staff, I wrote back, explaining how they were wrong, and telling them that they cost him quite a few votes. In the next primary, I worked very hard for his opponent, getting a number of people who wouldn't have otherwise voted to vote for his opponent; I also got some of his supporters to switch. He lost the primary by 3%. Unfortnately, his opponent was Carol Moseley Braun, who won the Senate seat, but was plagued by poor judgement in her choice of campaign manager, and in her personal relationship with him. She was defeated in her next election.
