366.. If Barbie were life-size, her measurements would be 39-23-33. She would stand seven feet, two inches tall.

Haven't read all this in case it has already been mentioned but how does anyone consider 7' 2" life size? In your dreams maybe. Eek

What's funny, gat, is how many different sizes are given for Barbie at various sites.

You dream about 7'2" chicks? Big Grin

quote:257.. A duck's quack does not echo and no one knows why

Using some very serious audio equipment and two white ducks, the guys at "Mythbusters" have proved that a "quack" does indeed echo, but that the echo is pretty much undetectable by the human ear.

Can I just butt in and make a comment about what Dorian said regarding sneezing with your eyes open? Yes, it is possible...if you use your fingers to keep your eyes open! Razz

Actually, closing your eyes is an automatic reflex that is "hotwired" into your nervous system, so to speak. But it is a reflex that you can train yourself to change. It is extremely difficult and few people can actually recondition themselves.

So go ahead and try it. It can be done...but can you do it? Wink

I can absolutely do it. Had to try the first time I heard it was impossible. It ain't difficult for me.

Just part of my nature - if you tell me not to do it, I've got to find out why! Wink

Here's the research you wanted, Fuse...in a way.

#278 - the Queen Elizabeth 2 moving only 6" per gallon -
According to Cunard Lines, "one gallon of fuel will move the ship 49.5 feet; with the previous steam turbine engines, one gallon of fuel moved the ship 36 feet. "
"The ship's fuel oil tank capacity of 4,381.4 tonnes is sufficient for 10 days' sailing at 32.5 knots, equalling 7,800 miles." - Cunard.com

Since 6" is about 1% of 49.5', if the QE2 only moved 6" for each gallon, it would run out of fuel about every 78 miles. The distance from Southampton, England to New York is about 3600 miles (3100 nautical miles).

DG, I'd nearly forgotten what turned out to be such a fun and lively thread. Thanks for the additional information and research!

An update on #83 -

Larry Checkon, in his pumpkin patch in Northern Cambria, keeps his eye on his prized 1,469-pound pumpkin. Shortly after this photo was taken, Checkon's pumpkin was taken to a weigh-in in Altoona and set a world record. - http://www.post-gazette.com/pg/05281/584692.stm

WARREN, Rhode Island (AP) — Despite heavy rains that stunted pumpkin growth, a Rhode Island farmer has set what could be a record for the largest pumpkin in the world.

Ron Wallace's pumpkin weighed 1,502 pounds at Saturday's weigh-off competition, heavier than the current Guinness World Record-holding 1,469-pound pumpkin grown last year by Larry Checkon of Pennsylvania.

Wallace said at the 13th annual Rhode Island Southern New England Giant Pumpkin Growers Championship that the key to growing a giant pumpkin is the ability to commit to the task from April to October. - http://www.usatoday.com/weather/news/2006-10-08-record-pumpkin_x.htm

34.. The giant squid has the largest eyes in the world.

Since the Colossal Squid is now known to not only be the largest known squid species, but also to have a larger, heavier, and stouter body (as opposed to tentacles and whips) than a Giant Squid, it seems safe to say that the mantle of having the largest eyes in the world has passed to the more recently discovered species.

"362.. Our eyes are always the same size from birth..."

False.

The average newborn’s eyeball is about 18 millimeters in diameter, from front to back (axial length). In an infant, the eye grows slightly to a length of approximately 19½ millimeters. It continues to grow gradually to a length of about 24-25 millimeters, or about 1 inch, in adulthood. (A ping-pong ball is about 1½ inch in diameter, which makes the average adult eyeball about 2/3 the size of a ping-pong ball.) - Anatomy, Physiology and
Pathology of the Human Eye
Ted M. Montgomery,
Optometric Physician

Sorry it took so long to get to this one. I just never got around to getting a source for something I knew to be true.

This brings the total of errors in the original post to 46. (Still about half of what I originally thought)_
