I've always liked Owen's war poetry. I'd vote for him.

In Flanders fields.

It has a certain anxious hope, the feeling that a soldier fears that he may die in vain, and so hit close at home in WW1.

I post while wearing a British Legion poppy on my lapel, of course, as we do . (It would be a very great mistake for any politician or anyone on TV not to be wearing one: almost treason ! )

The poppy is the perfect image. It sprang up in great fields of blood red over acres and acres of the battlefields. The seeds may lie dormant for decades until the soil is disturbed enough to set them germinating: their sudden emergence was in tens of thousands to start life on the very soil where tens of thousands of men had suddenly ended theirs (and both from the self-same cause, the bombardment ). How poignant can the mass germination of a weed be? Smile
