If you have an irrational illogical fear of something, you have a (blank)phobia. If you have an irrational illogical compulsion or obsession about something, what are you? Is there a Greek or Latin suffix for obsessions? And is there a list anywhere of all of the obsessions that are medically approved? I have one for the phobias and was looking for something similar. Thank you.

"Mania" means having an obsession for something.

To my knowledge, COD is a blanket cover all for any obsessive or compulsive behavior. There are so many that I think it gets rather involved with old Latin terminology. Although there are probably a few old terms for some of the more common OCD disorders. I don't think the modern psychiatric community uses there terms commonly any more.

I may be wrong about this, but I think that many are treated by a psychiatrist for medication control and they go to a therapist for treatment of the particular disorder.

People who suffer from these conditions would still be human beings. wink They may, however, have developed an "Obsessive Compulsive Personality Disorder".(DSM) If you need any information, such as: Features of the Disorder, Impairment, Complications, Criteria, I'd be more than happy to get that for you.

Duh. :-) I know they are human beings. Besides, I think all of us are a little obsessive compulsive. But no, thank you, I don't need the information. I took Abnormal Psych. I simply couldn't remember the term, which Texan-in-Exile so helpfully provided.

I apologize if I offended you.

My emphasis was on reassurance. Most people are understandably sensitive to being identified as their conditions or illnesses. I did my best to give reassurance as benignly as possible.

Frankvan: Thank you. That's a great list.

Doriek: I realize that sensitivity is an issue. I only wanted the word. It's not like I'm going to hunt down people and yell "you're a nutty poriomanic!" and harass them to the ends of the earth. I just wanted the word. Which I have now.
