Visit the product Mind Maker, which works by projecting subliminal messages on your computer screen.

1) How would you like to take a chance on experiencing some subliminal messages on your computer screen?

2) Can we be sure that we do not have software which we may not want on our computers at work, at the library, or even at home?

I visited the Mind Maker product description, which has very little info about the product and no additional links that I could find running my mouse over the page.

The biggest risk is wasting good money on a worthless software product. Read about subliminal messages in this article from "Skeptic's Dictionary", and find out about the early "research" into subliminal advertising (a false urban legend, based on falsified data) at snopes.com.

Professor: I just knew that you would find my latest way out thread!

Truly, I received a slightly more informative e-mail about the product.

What continues to make me think that there just might be a smidgeon of truth to the idea that someone can be subliminally influenced by reading a virtually invisible message is that I know that some folks encode keywords in the same color as the screen, but I also know that reputable search engines try to not list such encoded pages, not because they might influence a reader, but because they influence the ranking of such pages by ranking them higher than those without such unfair keywords. That, of course, I realize is a whole other topic.

Eudj, I'm delighted to hear that you stopped smoking -- you'll always be glad you did.

That fact that it "really works" for you is what's known as anecdotal evidence, scientifically weak. The real question is whether you would have quit smoking without the software, or -- perhaps more to the point -- whether you would have quit smoking using "placebo" software without the subliminal messages. Indeed, how do you know the messages were really there? If they're truly subliminal, you won't be aware of them!

I don't think it's accurate to simply say that subliminal messages don't work. See this for example--

http://www.scienceblog.com/community/older/1996/A/199600641.html

Yet the link in the first post is claiming thier software can turn you into Superman. Anyone who buys that software, please message me. I have an amazing and beautiful bridge to sell you... cheap! Simply driving across this bridge will cause you to lose weight, make you better looking, and raise your IQ by 50 points! And it cures cancer!

(Your results may vary. Offer void where prohibited. This bridge is offered on an 'as is' basis. NO REFUNDS! However, if the bridge is defective, I will be happy to sell you another bridge somewhere else... ;P)

This topic really brought me back in time! lol! I remember, in the 70's, our way cool rock bands were accused of the exact same thing. It was called 'devil worship' messages, in the day. If you played the record backwards, it had all kinds of messages shipped to your sub-conscious mind.

In the 70's, the 'devil worsihip' thing was not fact at all. I believe you have to be conscious, at some level, for acceptance of any belief or ignore and know yourself, values, ethics, religion, beliefs, etc.

I wouldn't fear this. History does really repeat itself! It didn't work in the 70's, with popular music. It will not work with people of today using a computer. Don't be afraid! No one has power over your mind, but you....
