I have clinically been diagnosed with night terrors, and I want to know if there is anyone else out there who has this. It's something I have to take a med for before I go to bed, so I don't fall down the steps again in my sleep. I just want to know if anyone has found something else to cure this besides medication? Here is a site that explains it, and believe me, it's no picnic! Night Terrors

phew, that is no walk in the park...

i hope you're coping well. this must not be something easy to deal with.

i find that to ease my sleep (and my dog's, hee!), i listen to classical music. have a nice glass of water at the side of your bed during the night. have a (big) flashlight in reaching distance. nightlights are for adults, too.

try to think of a place that you would always like to be, no matter what, be it you have a throbbing headache, a upset stomach, depressed about social drama, etc. think of that place (for example, i would think of a bright forest, maybe even with some rain, cause i find rain relaxing). then, look through magazines or online search engines to try to find this picture. get the picture, make it look nice by pasting it on a piece of paper, and put it by your bed.

also, try to think of relaxing sounds, tastes, smells, anything to fill your senses and make you think of other things.

this was dan's humble, unprofessional opinion. thanks for reading. ^_^

Both of my twins had night terrors. They started at 2 and they still get at least one a month now that they are 6. It was extremely hard on me to watch them going through that and not being able to do anything about it. I would just have to make sure they didn't leave their room because of the stairs. We now have a gate up just in case.
I can not imagine being an adult and having these. I hope the medicine gives you some relief.
Do they happen around a certain time? Sometimes if I would wake the boys up two hours after they went to bed for a drink of water, they would not have a terror that night. They would normally get them three hours after bed. I think that by waking them up it broke the cycle. It didn't always work but it did a lot of the time. Maybe you could set an alarm to wake yourself up a couple of hours after bed. It may not work for you but you could always give it a shot.
I hope you find some solution. You have my sympathies.

They say that you grow out of these things, but I guess I never grew up, lol. But the scariest part is how fast your heart beat accelerates. Also, you can imagine how I felt when waking up in flight down 15 steps, only to really hurt myself when landing at the bottom of the stairs. I survived it, but I do not want it to happen again. I will try the suggestions, though. It's kind of weird, it does happen like a half an hour to an hour after I go to sleep. I have been having this for over 30 years, and the meds are just a bandaid on it. I guess it's the subconscious mind reacting or something, but with the heavy medicine I'm taking (Trazadone), I can't even recall my dreams. I sleep like a rock. Guess that's better than having awful dreams.

OMG night terrors are awful. I have actually gotten up at nite and made phone calls to my dad when i was younger and he was at medical conventions or the hospital and would just scream at him in the phone and never remember it the next day. I used to have to sleep with my light on at all times. I could be sound asleep and they would come by my room and turn off my light and within minutes i would wake up screaming my head off and never remember it. My parents used to have an awful time with me on these but, I havent had one for sometime now, I hope you get over your soon and good luck.
