What is the difference between Bi-polar and manic depression? Someone told me they were the same, and another person said there was a difference but they didn't know what the difference was, only that the medicine used to treat them was different.
Manic-Depression was the original designation in Mental Health a while back.. they (those responsible for making decisions in Mental Health) decided that Bi-Polar would be the new designation for that particular illness. The "Manic" aspect refers to a hyperactive mental and physical energy. The person feels almost a euphoria of invinsibility. During the "Depressive" stage, the person becomes very lethargic and has very little mental or physical energy. Here is a site with more information.

The site did not list it, but in some cases, during the manic phases, people with bi-polar disorder are prone to violent episodes. I know this first hand, as I have dealt with people with this illness. It is a very hard illness to deal with, but it is highly treatable. In most cases, people can take medications and preform a near normal life.

was Bi-Polar/Manic depressive and lost the battle. He commited suicide. His father, his sister and brother are all being treated for the same. And now I fear for them as well since the loss of Anthony. They are medicated, but one was misdiagnosed at first and was given a drug that made his symptons worse. He became very suicidal and thanks to some sharp people they recognized the signs and corrected the meds.
