Hi greksgirl, I wonder if you could be thinking of "When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit" by Judith Kerr? This book is the most well known in a trilogy by Kerr. It was published in 1971, and is a semi-autobiographical account of a young girl's experiences in Nazzi Germany. There is a dachshund in the novel that, I think, belongs to the child's grandmother, the dog is called Pumpel. Here's a synopsis. Let me know if it's the one, otherwise I'll keep looking! When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit It's not out of print btw, and is still a very popular book: Amazon
