Everyone is always talking about this book. It seems to pop up everywhere! What are your thoughts on this book? If you have read it, would you recommend it? What are the main themes of the book? +++++++++++ 08-01-02, 02:33 AM babthrower It's witty and intelligent, and shows the particular kind of foolishness associated with courtship among a certain social class and at a certain time in England. It's broader than that, though, because it deals with snobbishness (which is still with us) and playing false. It's a good read, even though it was written almost two hundred years ago.
08-01-02, 11:36 AM Elexina I hated it. It was the most awful and dragging book I ever read (except, perhaps, Roald Dahl's "Boy" or Steve Gutterson's "Snow Falling On Cedars"). But then, that is how I feel about all of Jane Austen's work.
08-01-02, 02:52 PM christineell smile If you don't want to read the book, then the BBC produced a super video starring Colin Firth who also appeared in Bridget Jones Diary(which,in itself is a modern version of P&P). The BBC production also starred Jennifer Erhle as Miss Elizabeth Bennett. smile
08-01-02, 06:27 PM Kate Wood The BBC series was excellent, and is a great way to get to know the story, because the book IS old and does have a lot of complicated words that even your average well educated adult might not know. It's also written in that old style that some people find hard to read. But i DO reccomend the book or series, because it's such a good story that's still relevant today about exactly what it says, Pride and Prejudice.
08-09-02, 10:21 PM BlueJewel06 I read the book and I thought it was excellent! It didnt seem to drag out (maybe that was because I just used two days to read the whole thing) I loved it so much! thank you all!
09-05-02, 01:57 PM Prothero One of my favorites I've always found the formality of language supports the characters rather than detracting. The pride and prejudice of their stations in life reflect the (near) downfall I suspect most of us experience at various times of life. I honestly believe that this book set a standard beyond the skill of modern romance writers and will remain a classic long after the others are replaced by newer books.
The BBC series is excellent, but it is the curse of films that the actress chosen for Elizabeth, however charming, will always be in conflict with the descriptions of the sisters as written.

09-14-02, 01:42 AM Abish I have to admit that I saw the movie before I read the book, but I have to say that I absolutely love them both. The genius and humor that went into that book is just amazing to me. I don't think a day goes by without somesort of mention of it or a quote from it between my friends and I. I have to say my favorite line is one by Ms. Bingley: "Miss Eliza Bennett can I persuade you to follow my example and take a turn about the room, it's so refreshing!" I use that almost any time I want to walk somewhere with someone else. Anyway, all I have to say about it is wonderful things. I recommend the book and the movie 100%. I love them!
09-30-02, 03:39 PM Julieta Martinez I haven't read the book yet, but I can't wait to start. I have a list of all the classic books, and my goal is to read them all!
