Hi,
Anyone know of a poem which is about (or features) an old lady in a rocking chair with perhaps a dog at her feet (even better)WRITTEN MORE THAN 70 YEARS AGO. I need a quote (containing the above info) of no more than a few lines of rhythmic poetry. The reason (!!)... It is for a grade 4 music theory book in which a student needs to set words to a rhythm which should total no more than eight bars. The few lines of poetry (if found!!) will also accompany a drawing (of the old lady), which I already pocess.

Any suggestions?
Many thanks!

Rac

How's this?

More like 70 seconds old rather than 70 years, but if you hang on to it for long enough...?...?...

Anyhow, here goes...

An old girl who married a docker
Would sing in the style of Joe Cocker
She swung in her chair
As she let down her hair.
When asked why, said, “I'm such an old rocker!”

Sorry, forgot about the dog, working on it...

An old girl who married a docker
Would sing in her chair like Joe Cocker.
She swung as she yowled,
At her feet, her dog howled.
It was clear she was just an old rocker...

Come on, Rachel, at least it's free...
I want this book dedicating to me...

The way that she swung in her chair
Gave the rest of the home quite a scare
Her dog left her feet
With a terrified bleat
And shot forty yards through the air...

Some further thoughts on things artistic & poetic...

An old girl would rock in her chair;
Never bathed or indeed washed her hair...
The dog at her feet
Found a luxury treat
Was to run off, and breathe some fresh air...

See, Rachel, all the salient points are there above, for your considered edification...

Heaven Sent

The house is so quiet
As I walk to the door
Someone lives here, that's for sure…

The door being open I could feel the cool air
And there before me was an old rocking chair.
And on it sat an old woman with a small dog at her feet
So deep in sleep were they
That I didn't have a word to say.

So I tiptoed away, and as I went
To be that contented had to be
Heaven sent.

Well done, Kendor.
But will this deter the great poet in our midst? Somehow, I doubt it.
It'll be interesting to see what Ritz has penned during the night, when we turn on our computers tomorrow.Smile

Lines On Lines

An ancient old crone
In an old rocking chair
Drunk as a skunk,
Lily-white hair.
Toothless old dog
At her feet gave a snore
I just couldn't wait to run out of the door...

Let's face it, Motion is pretty motionless ! Andrew Motion is the Poet Laureate, the official Royal court poet. Not many Britons know who he is , either. His 'salary' for the job is £5000 a year, but his predecessors received only a butt (barrel) of sherry. His predecessors were a lot better value for their reward. They include Wordsworth, Tennyson, Dryden, Masefield and Betjeman. His works, written for state occasions ( when he feels obligated to write at all), are banal efforts.Ritzmar's effort is not a parody. A parody imitates the original's style.Motion could never write a piece of such simple, attractive, vigour !

Thanks Jenny. I was wondering where he got his inspiration. Us non-creative types have to remember, that every poet needs his muse. Smile

Thank goodness for you, Fred. I sat here puzzled as to why Ritz had signed that moving piece of verse as he did. And then you explained.

Are you suggesting that he is Poet Laureate material?
He certainly is a very unusual man, and that in itself might qualify him.
