About 35 to 40 years ago (showing my age here), while in High School I read a series of books set in post WWII Germany about a young girl and her Dachshund and how she gets along trying to survive. I think there was a time she lived in an old castle with other displaced persons and their dogs also. I would like to find some of these but I can't remember titles or author. Can anyone help? {email removed per AP policy}I have tried all the serchs I can think of.

Hi greksgirl,

I wonder if you could be thinking of "When Hitler Stole Pink Rabbit" by Judith Kerr? This book is the most well known in a trilogy by Kerr.

It was published in 1971, and is a semi-autobiographical account of a young girl's experiences in Nazzi Germany.
There is a dachshund in the novel that, I think, belongs to the child's grandmother, the dog is called Pumpel.

Here's a synopsis. Let me know if it's the one, otherwise I'll keep looking!

It's not out of print btw, and is still a very popular book:

Thanks for the title, sounds interesting. Thats not the one though. There is a series of the books I'm looking for loosly conected. They were placed after WWII had ended and concerned displaced persons trying to cope. One was in an old castle or family mansion(sp?) and they all involved a mid to late teens girl. I know the dog was a long-haired Dachsie (I had 2 at the time and thats what drew me), also maybe Great Danes. I have looked and had a librarian help me and we can't seem to find it, thats why I thought they might be out of print.

That's too bad you are having such trouble finding it. I was so sure it was the book I suggested. Smile

Maybe the story rings a bell with another member here, but I'll keep looking for you.
Can you remember any of the characters' names?
