If you have a call tone, the person who is calling you hears a the call tone instewad of a ring.

Yeah, when the person you're calling hears the music instead of a ring, that would be the ringtone, I guess.

Confirming the above definition, here's an article / breathless hype piece from TMCnet (boldface mine):
quote:
You dial the number you want to connect to and then you get that familiar ring ring sound in the earpiece until the call is answered. That “Ring Ring” sound is known as the ringback tone. We take it for granted as part of every phone call we make. Well that is all about to change! A new type of service, CallTones, is sweeping the world. It allows users to choose what people hear as ringback when they call them. This will change the sound of telephony forever...CallTones change the way a call sounds to person calling the subscriber — exactly the people subscribers most want to impress.
So there you have it. I can't wait to get mine. Are you impressed yet? Roll Eyes

Thanks so much for your answers. Smile

I ordered a $2.50 call tone for my phone. I get $5.00 in free downloads per month so I decided to try it out. The numbers I choose hear the song until either I answer or my voice mail kicks in. I guess its ok. (I'm not that impressed) The call tone is good for 90 days.

I saw there are nasty call tones you can get if someone keeps bothering you or for any unknown callers.

I prefer the ringers which let me know who is calling by the ring. That is useful. I work midnights so I know if its important enough for me to get up and answer. The call tone seems like a gimmick.
