Hi! Smile I was wondering something about cages. There are not any suitable rabbit or guinea pig cages in my area. I was thinking of just getting a dog kennel, instead. I mean, it would be big enough and everything. Then, I thought about the differences in the wiring. Dog kennels are that dark colored, rusty-feeling wire. Cages that are for small pets are that smooth wiring. Does anyone know if it'd be okay to have a rabbit or guinea pig in a dog kennel, or would it do better in a small pet cage? I don't know where I'd find a suitable small pet cage, but.....
If you know an answer, please reply!
Thank you! Smile

Are you talking about a dog crate or an outside kennel? I would think you could use a dog crate if the wire is small enough to keep the pet from escaping. When we had a rabbit, we let it outside for short periods of time in a dog kennel or dog run but we reinforced the sides of the kennel with rabbit proof fence to make sure she couldn't get out. YOu also have to watch because rabbits burrow. I'm not sure if guinea pigs do this or not. If you are thinking of keeping the pet outdoors, you will need to make sure no other animal can get in to your pet plus that the pet has some type of shelter in case of rain, snow, etc.

I mean a kennel...the ones you can use if you're house training a puppy... The one I was thinking about has small enough spaces between the wires where it couldn't get out, and no other animal could get in. It would be an indoor pet, so, no need to worry about that. Smile

I would think you could use a crate. One word of warning though. Our rabbit always pee'd in the same corner of her cage and eventually it made a hole in that corner. It was a second hand cage that my cousin gave to me so that might have been why. Her hamster had died and she didn't want to get another one so when we got our rabbit she gave us her cage. I cleaned the cage often. One thing I was always told that there was a certain type of litter that you shouldn't use but I can't remember which one it is. Sorry about not remembering but if you do research on it I'm sure you'll find out which one. Both rabbits and guinea pigs need things to chew on. Pet stores have chew sticks and I always had a salt or vegetable block in my cages too for them to nibble on.

Yes, I've read about that litter you're not supposed to use...although, I can't think of what it is at the moment. But, I know what to buy and not buy, if I should get one. Smile
As for your rabbit going to the bathroom in the same corner...That's good. They're supposed to use the same spot for their bathroom. So are hamsters, and other little animals like that. Smile It's kind of a bad thing if it made a hole, though, but, I'd believe it.
I've also read that they are constant chewers, so, I'll make sure it has plenty of chew toys. Smile
Thank you for your reply! Smile
