Hi
Even though a rabbit isn't strictly a rodent, because it is similiar, I hope I can post this question here:
I have just bought a large male albino rabbit (i.e. all white including the eyes which are red/white) and I am wondering what the outcome will likely be if he breeds with my smaller female rabbit which is 95% white and has brown eyes. Is the albino eye gene a dominant gene or may an all white bunny with brown eyes result, which would be great!
Also, I have not had rabbits for long: Do people usually keep rabbits inside the house in winter or is it possible to buy covers which insulate the hutch so they are comfortable when the weather is freezing.

MAny thanks!

It is a common misconception that rabbits are a rodent or in the rodent family. Rabbits and hares are from the family of Lagomorpha Rabbits differ from rodents in having an extra pair of incisors and in other skeletal features. Rodents have two incisors in the upper as well as in the lower jaw and are of the order Rodentia

The color of your rabbit is called ruby eyed white. Ruby eyes do not have the same genes as blue eyed whites. There is not enough space here to go into color genetics, so I have posted a link to a page which explains color genes. Scroll down to “color saturation- Gene C

No rabbits do not do well in weather extremes, but the web site linked below has some very good information for new rabbit owners and I encourage you to read the site thoroughly.

I forgot to mention on my other post that foxes are not the only predator you need to watch for but dogs, wildcats, minks, stroats, weasels, polecats and European otters who sometimes feeds on them. Most of these hunt at night so it has been suggested that you bring your rabbits indoors for the night.
