I'm not sure where exactly to post this, so if anyone has a better suggestion, please let me know. But anyway:
I dyed my hair two years ago with a "temporary" dye (one of those 12-24 washes?) and I'm thinking I probably have washed my hair at least twelve times in the past two years (har har) but the damn dye still has not yet washed out completely. It was a Clairol black hair dye and my hair is light to medium brown. ...Any suggestions, short of bleaching and starting over?

You could try a safe color remover.

If this doesn't work you may have to see a professional.

Hey, I notice that too, the level two shampoos last longer than they say they do even with frequent washing. In fact, I always dye my hair permanently with blonde every summer, but I use a temporary shade of light ash brown over top of it a couple weeks later to make it the perfect shade for me. I also have found that the six day temporary dyes are a waste of time because they damage your hair more and only last less than a week. If you do redye your hair go lightest first and then darken thats my only advice.

I did that once. I'm a medium redhead and died it a dark purple rinse. It was supposed to last 10-15 washes, but it held on. I went to a salon colorist and she stripped it right out with some special solution.

I am no beautician, so I may be wrong about this one, but I think temp colors do contain peroxide that can permanently change your hair color. I bleach my hair with one of those frosting caps. To make sure that I get even color, I use toners in a slightly darker shade. They will wash out after a while with no ill effects. You can get these at those Sally stores. It may be a inexpensive fix to get your hair the same color. I have also heard about color specialist. They are a bit on the expensive side, but will fix the problem.

Your hair can only take so much. Trust me. I had been dying my hair myself for 8 years. Been every shade of blonde, brown, was burgandy for 2 years & even tried black with blue highlites. And I'm taling about dying my hair at least 2x a month.
Never had a problem.

Then 1 day last Sept. I tried to dye my hair a darker shade of blonde. My hair didn't like it at all! It turned my hair gray with lavender streaks. I was really upset/disappointed. I went to a salong the following day & had to have my hair butchured off & dyed a darker color. I used to have hair down to my waiste but because of the unfortunate dye thing, it is now just below my ears! and i do not have the patience to grow it out again. Just a warning tho. Please be careful & if you are unsure about anything, Please consult a professional! Esencia smile

I did the same thing. Those temporary hair dyes that say they wash out after 12-24 washings should have a warning on them. My hair had natural highlights of blonde through them. I picked a dye that I thought would cover the little gray I have coming through and bring out the hightlights. Well, I have an auburn tint now, which is permanent, no blonde hightlights at all. This really upset me because I didn't expect it to stay in there forever, now I have to decide to mess with it anymore or just go on as a redhead. My advice, be sure you want to dye your hair before you do it, otherwise you may damage your hair and have to get it all cut off.

I consider myself lucky that I'm a blonde...I've been using "rinses" for a couple of years now to cover the gray (darn it!!) and luckily haven't had any problems. I only have to use it in the winter.

Blondes do not "gray" gracefully...it's not pretty, since it turns a very dull yellowish-gray color.

Most natural blondes do not stay blonde their entire life, but some of us do. Between my two daughters, one is still blonde at 22, and the other, at 13, is turning more brown. I'm of Finnish descent, and the blonde hair gene is very strong.

In my family on my mom's side, there's only one other woman that has stayed blonde during her life, and as far as I know, she started covering the gray at about 40...

At 44, I've finally resorted to a color rinse in the winter since the gray sets in more then due to the lack of sun. During the summer, though, since I spend alot of time in the yard, I don't have to worry about it..the sun bleaches it out and by September I'm almost platinum.

I feel that I'll outlast my great aunt in "blond-ness", and will be blonde my entire life. If I was going to be anything but blonde it would have happened way before now!

Those who dye your hair blonde can eat your heart out!, except I'll have to continue covering up that darned grey hair!

I can see where darker hair colors could have MORE problems though...

Rather than repeating a color treatment if it's too soon, visit your local salon, since they might have a fix! Too many chemicals on your hair can do some real long-term damage!

This may be a dumb question, so here's your chance to laugh it up.

If you dyed your hair 2 years ago, wouldn't it grow out? I would think that in 2 years, you would have your hair cut a few times and the roots would renew your original color automatically. Does the dye affect your roots, too?

(This is coming from a guy with a crew cut and an advanced case of bare skin on top, so needless to say I don't bother with dying!)

Well since it's been 2 years it is quite safe to do just sabout anything with the color. I would either bleach my hair and then dye it to your original hair color, or go to a salon and have your color stripped. I have been dying my hair for years ( i am only 17 btw) and my hair is really really healthy. I have never had a problem with dry or frizzy hair.

On most people, yes, but since my hair is three feet long... well, you get the picture. Also, I went to a salon and they did strip it and it's *still* dark. I really don't want to hack it all off, at least not until after the wedding! I will try that Clairol stuff, though, thanks Clarebear. Cross your splitends for me! ;-)
