I think that the child's cognitive abilities would not be as developed as in a child who was allowed to play. Playing allows a child to use his imagination and often to see cause and effect in action. A child would have trouble in problem-solving if he had difficulty imagining solutions.

I would guess that it would cause severe social development problems. Playing helps kids learn to relate to other kids, and to role play (put themselves in other situations, immitate adults, etc). Without play, I'm not sure how they would develop social skills.

The lack of stimulation has a great effect on the physical development of any child. Children brought up in institutions have limited opportunities to express themselves in role play and exercise etc and therefore are slower in developing motor skills. Gross motor skills are skills using the large muscles of the body, as in exercise. sports and general movements. Fine motor skills use the small muscles of the body as in hand/eye co-ordination, in activities such as cutting out, drawing, doing up buttons etc.

Have a read at this site

http://www.bensoc.asn.au/parc_search/transracial_article_educate.html

It gives a lot of info about the bringing up of children in orphanages and the effect it has on the child's development.

Good luck in your assignment. Smile
