I am trying to find a place in Arizona (or near it) where I can get a custom made camel saddle for my dromedary camel, Cleo. The saddle I have does not fit her well so I've mostly been going on bareback. I need it soon because I'm planning a camping trip up to Mingus Mountain and without a saddle, I have little packing room.

Less urgently, I'm looking for a camel trailer that holds at least four camels. The one I have only holds two. A camel trailer has to be taller than a horse trailer (about 8ft tall).

If anyone knows of someone who can help me that'd be great.

Very few people own camels in the United States and it is as I’m sure you have already discovered that it is much easier to find tack for llama’s. I’ve searched thru many of the llama sites in the hopes of finding something but the searches turned up empty.

I’m not sure how helpful this is but there is a tourist stop at wild horse pass. . . Chandler, Arizona that has camel rides. Perhaps someone there who works with the camels can steer you in the right direction or provide you with information.

I did also come across what appears to be the only one in the United States that carries tack for camels. Hopefully they have what you need.

you didn’t say what make and or style of trailer you prefer, but you might try contacting the manufacturer of your choice and see if they would be willing to accommodate you.

Thanks I'll take a look with the second link. I don't know why that other website is still up, Rawhide closed down not too long ago (of course they probably just moved), but I'll still check it out and see what I can find.

The style of trailor doesn't really matter to me as long as it can hook up to a widebed truck and is comfortable for at least 4 camels. Camels don't panic as easily as horses, so a view of the traffic would be no big deal.

There just may be some wild camels left in Arizona, although it is doubtful. The last sighting was in 1946.

According to historians, the last wild camel in Arizona was captured in 1946 and the last reported sighting of a wild camel in North America was in Baja California in 1956.

Yes, there used to be quite a few wild camels. There is even still a law that says hunting of wild camels is illegal. A reason they could have died off is that either the Arizona plants contans a low selenium concentration, creating selenium deficiency, or that they had too much access to agricultural grains. That's just my guess.

I certainly don't know, but it would seem to me that there was never really a sustainable population. Their lack of multiple births and long gestation period would limit any flock* growth, I think. There are few naturally wild camels left. The large flock in Australia is feral, and descended of introduced camels.


*Yes, I looked it up. The collective noun for a group of camels can be either flock or caravan.
