I'm not quite sure what the question is here, Dan. That's what's been called Fermat's Last Theorum. Fermat claimed to have proven it in 1637, but left no evidence of it, saying only:
"It is impossible to write a cube as a sum of two cubes, a fourth power as a sum of fourth powers, and, in general, any power beyond the second as a sum of two similar powers. For this, I have found a truly wonderful proof, but the margin is too small to contain it." Or, really: "Cubum autem in duos cubos, aut quadratoquadratum in duos quadratoquadratos, et generaliter nullam in infinitum ultra quadratum potestatem in duos ejusdem nominis fas est dividere: cujus rei demonstrationem mirabilem sane detexi. Hanc marginis exiguitas non caperet." It was finally proven in 1994 (published in 1995) by Andrew Taylor and Richard Wiles. Part 1 of proof Part 2 139 pages of advanced math - not for the faint hearted. |
