How do I calculate this?

The load that a beam of given thickness can carry safely is directly proportional to the beam's width and inversely proprotional to its length. If a beam 10m long and 50mm wide can support 9000kg, what is the load that could be supported by a beam of identical thickness 25m long and 75mm wide?

If A is directly proportional to B, then

A = Y x B

Where Y is some constant.

If A is inversely proportional to C, then

A = Z / C

Where Z is some constant.

If A is directly proportional to B and inversely proportional to C, then

A = W x ( B / C )

Where W is some constant.

So to solve this problem, we substitute the first set of conditions into that equation and solve for W.

A = W x ( B / C )
9000kg = W x (10 m / 0.05 m)
W = 9000kg x 0.05m / 10m = 45kg

Then we substitute what we know for the second set of conditions.

A = W x ( B / C )
A = 45kg x (25m / 0.075m)
A = 15000kg

B and C got mixed up in the above solution, B is the width and C is the length, but the values were reversed due to the tricky ordering of the wording. Using the otherwise correct equation, solve to get 5400 Kg as the max load the beam can support.
