Doug, if you want an answer in days meaning 24 hour periods, then you have to tell us the following:

Early afternoon = how many minutes

Late afternoon = how many minutes

Sometime in the afternoon = how many minutes

You see, none of those three terms above has a definite mathematical value associated with it. All are rough approximations of some unknown period in time, only defined in a very general and vague way. When does early afternoon start? When does it stop? How much time is being used then when you use the term? Of course, the same things can be said about late afternoon. Is the afternoon divided into just 2 parts, early and late, or are there 3 parts, early, middle, and late? How many minutes does each last? Further, just how long is "some time in the afternoon"? Is it a second" A minute? An hour?

Another problem is the word "day". Do you mean a 24 hour time period, or the term "day" as opposed to night? Or do you mean day as opposed to evening and night?

Basically, you just asked us "If I had a few oranges, some bananas, and a ball of string, how much stuff do I have". We really need to know what you mean by each term you use.

Word problems are sometimes tough because the English language is very flexible. As Dorian points out we don't have precise information to give an exact answer but sometimes all we need is an approximate answer.

The second part of your question is a little easier.. Starting on Monday we go to Tuesday at the exact same time we have 1 day. Continuing from Tues to Wednesday we have a second day. Then a little bit more for 'late afternoon' we have 'about 2 days'.

Your first question is a bit confusing.
If we change Tuesday 'all day' to The 'remainder of Tuesday'. Then we can start at early afternoon on Tuesday to the same exact time on Wednesday is 1 day plus the little extra time from early afternoon to late afternoon. A little more than 1 day.

I hope we've helped.
