I'm adding a small storage room behind our garage. The foundation and floor are done, and I have the walls up. The roof is the hard part. I'm looking for resources for help in attaching the new roof to the existing 2 roofs. A picture of the project so far:
(images/addition-walls.jpg for picture. First post here, so I don't know what the server will do with the inline image.)
I was planning on matching both existing roofs and make it a hip roof from the outside corner. But one contractor suggested a gable that would peak over the new outside doorway. He says it will be easier to build, and I think it will add some architectural interest compared to having the garage roof be longer.
If anyone can offer help in figuring out how I would go about this via this forum, that'd be great. I'm currently waiting to hear back from the contractor if he would take on the job of framing the roof, using me as the 2nd man instead of one of his normal carpenters.
Until then, I do have a question: How should the end studs of each new wall be attached to the existing walls? I put around 12 nails into each. Is that enough or should I use lag screws?
Edited to remove over-large picture.

I think the contrator has the right idea. The gable will add intrest and would be the best of both roof lines.
Nails. 12 should be more then enough. Lag bolts would be needed if the was any pulling force. Your looking at a "shear" force here and when the walls and roof are finished, should be strong enough.
