Today's weather in Seattle is amazing! Can anyone currently living in Seattle give me an idea as to how often these type days (few or no clouds, nice blue sky, moderate temps), occur in the East Bay part of the San Francisco metro area?
I am considering a move to that area because of a job opportunity in San Francisco. My other half and I have come to the conclusion that we are most likely to own a home in that area if it is in the Berkeley or Oakland area (generally). Without turning this discussion into one of real estate, and realizing that where I may be working in San Francisco has a sort of unique weather situation of its own, what is East Bay weather like? Are there more clear days throughout the year as compared to Seattle? How are the temps, pretty moderate like Seattle from what I can see? Are there weeks of seemingly unbreakable clouds like there are here in the winter (lately spring, summer and fall too).
I don't need this type of weather everyday, heck, I grew up in New Jersey with cold and depressing winters. I do miss the fact that even in New Jersey during the winter there were days with some sun. I'm hoping the East Bay area may give me some of that back. I have had difficulty adjusting to the cloudy Seattle weather, even after four years of being here.
One last unrelated question, how green and lush is the East Bay area? I'm into landscaping, nice gardens and lush greenery. Am I going to be giving this up? It's been a few years since I've visited and I can't remember too well.
San Francisco has a micro climate - heck on some days it has micro-climates depedning on which side of the hills you are on. One can often look from the financial district west and see the fog banks trying to come over the hills.
SF Bay area gets the marine layer, that keeps it warm in the winter, and cool in the summer.
Whereas say 80 miles inland the temperature could be 110F the city could be 'suffering' from 75 to 80F temperature.
In winter while things are around 40F 80 miles inland, the city can have temperatures of 55-60F.
The Pacific side of the city is usually cooler and damper - getting a lot more fog than the bay side.
When I lived there in the early to mid 1990's I lived in the South of Market district. We had no air conditioning/cooling we had something like 1 or 2 80+ temperature days a year. Most of the time one can go around in shirt sleeves.
Winter time is the 'wet season' for California. Starting around Nov 2 and ending around Feb 28th we get more rains, cooler weather.
San Francisco gets moisture via night heavy dew/fog in the summer - further inland its dry as a bone.
Central California is a semi-tropical place - more Mediterranean the further inland you go. Golden Gate park has plants from around the world, from the temperate rain forests to the jungles of Brazil. In the Central Valley we get frosts very light frosts mostly. I keep the corn stalk Dracaonia outside on the porch, and hang a sheet around it - it fared very well two years ago under our 'hard' frost.
We also have citrus trees, grapes, olives, etc that can not be grown in heavy freeze areas.
Mind California has a wide range of climates, the Valley is one, the coast is another (usually more foggy and cooler than the valley). The mountains get snow. We have a few ski resorts east of here (Modesto Ca).
I raise a lot of my own food, have a lot of plants and trees on the 2 acres of land that I live on. We do need to irrigate in the summer, without it things would be in drought conditions.

Oakland is hot and dry in the summer. Frost is rare. Many things grow well there.
But um, this is the Washington forum. Maybe you should have this post moved to the California forum. Seattle climate does not resemble Oakland climate.
