A friend of mine has squirrels in her wall...up by the gutter, apparently they have worked their way in...they run around at night (and she thinks they leave during the day, but not sure). She wants to get rid of them and make sure they close up the hole by the gutter. I told her that you can't just close up the hole because the squirrel(s) will either a) die in there and not smell very good AT ALL or b) they will just try to chew something else to get out.

How the heck does one remove squirrels from an area such as this???

I used a live trap to get rid of a family of raccoons who had taken up residence in my attic. Perhaps your friend can try the same thing.

I thought of that too, but where would you put the traps??? They're not where they can be seen, I guess she hears them in the walls at night. They come and go as they please!! Roll Eyes

If she knows the route they're taking to get in, or has spotted their entrance, she can set the traps nearby. I don't know what you would use for bait for squirrels though.

I hate to mention it, but there is always D-Con. It makes them thirsty so they go out looking for water before they "cross over".

Oh yeah... I got my live trap at PetSmart. And hey, Lyds... Squirrels are rodents, you know. Same as mice and rats.

YABUTTTT...they're cute!!! Big Grin and, I feed them (squirrels, not rats!!).

Just seems wrong - what would happen if she "Dcon'd" them and then went outside and died and another animal ate them??? Would they die too?

I don't think she's done anything, I mentioned the traps to her, but it appears they are going in by a spot on the gutter and nowhere to put a trap. No idea what she's going to do.

I know... It's that whole "hands" thing. I used to think the raccoons were cute too until I had to repair the damage they did.

Can she set the trap on the roof? I don't know about the D-con ripple effect. But I think I'll do some "research".

According to this site there is "Only a very slight danger of secondary poisoning." It seems that the stuff has to accumulate to be effective.

awww man - - I couldn't freakin' read much more...got to the part where they gave a breakdown of how long it took cats...pigs...and various other animals to die...

and...they have to test this on them because????? sheesh - humans suck!

(oh...and thanks TC for your help on this - - that above comment was not directed at you - just a general observation. I do appreciate your checking things out for me...really!)

Unless they have a den (nest) (Females may have 2 litters a year, 1 in March or April and the other in June or July.) they will leave during the day to find food.

Well I think by the timing we know that they have a nest.

So how long does mom take care of the kids? About a month - So say 2 months for them to leave the den (nest).

This means that Mom could have two litters one in April (lasting until June) and one in July (lasting until September).

Mom will leave for short ventures during the day to get food and water. If you lay poison you poison mom, but the litter (between 6 and 9 babies) will still be in the den. Mom dies then they die from starvation - then you get to smell them for a month or so.

The best bet is to wait until late September (when the last litter has grown up) and during the day when they leave the house, close up the hole.

Trust me, it isn't that bad to have these as squatters, you could have skunks, snakes, or other critters which are not as nice as neighbors.

Cheers

David

What was I thinking? Mothballs. Just regular old mothballs will keep them away. How could I forget that?

You are so right ! Mothballs will drive just about anything out and away .... I've used that trick for years, and works every time..
