Our new house is covered by vinyl siding and we'd like to mount a couple flag holders on either side of the garage. The main problem is that the vinyl covering the wood framing isn't next to the wood! There is a gap of at least 1/2 " between the vinyl and the wood. If I screw the holder down 'as is' the vinvl will end up being concave where the holder is mounted which won't look very nice. The 2nd option is to mount the holders directly on the siding and use toggle bolts through the ply board under the siding to hold the flag holder against the siding (once again the squashed look). I've found a notched plastic fixture designed primarily to mount lights directly on the siding which would provide a more pleasing look, but I'm still concerned about the holder being secured to the wall with the toggle bolts as above. Any one with experience here or professional opinions out there in the pool? Thanks folks! Smile

What I would try in that case is hanger bolts. That's the thing with wood screw on one end and machine screw threads on the other. You could srew them into the wood and screw a nut onto the other end just up to the vinyl siding. Then mount a metal plate or the flag bracket with a second set of nuts.

Yep, I agree. Hanger Screws. AKA hanger bolt:

Look like this:

I would suggest drilling a hole about 1 and one quarter the diameter of your hanger screw, drill a pilot hole in the wood beneath. Once you have set your hanger screw seal around the hole with a paintable silicone - let it set before assembling the rest of the plate for the flag.

The larger hole will allow for the expansion and contraction of the vinyl vs the wood beneath thus your hanger screw will not crack or bend the vinyl during the course of the year.

I went with my 2nd option and used toggle bolts to mount the flag pole holder to the siding fixture and it looks pretty good even if I do say so. Probably a bit more expensive, but we're happy with the look. Thanks for the input folks Smile
