When we built our house (2005), we had a 3rd car garage added. It was cross hipped onto the main section, and in order to make the ample attic space into a nice scrapbooking room for my wife, I need to remove part of 2 rafters on the main section that would provide the entrance to the hip. Is this going to hurt the strength of my roof? (The main section has a high slope, and the hip has normal slope.)
I think it will hurt the integrity of the roof. I think you need to form a framed opening the makes up for the loss of the rafter. Without going into all the sizes and having a drawing of your roof it would be impossible to advise you properly.
Consult with a carpenter.

You should find a building designer or engineer to detail the changes. If you remove the rafters today it might not move for months, but it will move. Edited to remove advertising link.
