I own a construction company and I have been having my stuff ripped off once in a while, does anyone know of a cheap surveillance system, that will work at a job site? I am having trouble finding anything on the cheaper side. I found the Dewalt one but its to expensive for me.

If anyone can help I would appriciate it.

It is next to impossible to give any kind of advice with out knowing the situation.

Are these thefts from inside a building? Is the building new construction that can’t be locked up? Is it from the yard around the construction site? What is being stolen?

These may help us to help you.

I do mainly new construction. I have had plywood, copper wire, windows, and tools stolen from my job sites. I've locked the house, boarded up door ways and left supplies in side, and it doesn't stop the theifs. The only thing I can do is take everything home every day, which isn't possible most of the time.

Some people on this side of the Pond have the same issue as yourself and what they do is store their tools in a Steel Shipping Container (not the standard side 20ft or 40ft length) but the smaller 10ft unit though the 20ft unit is better if timber or scaffold poles are stored and some are fitted out as offices too or even customised with racking.
There are Aluminium bodied containers But I won't recommend them because they can be entered
by hacking through the panels and B) they are not suitable for flammable items
They can be rented out on contract. You go to the yard and have a look at the choice and Most rental companies deliver them direct to the site and offload it and collect it (all in the price) Query the purchase price too I think its about the same as a cheap car (New? about the same as a car)
And they'll drop it off as part of the price Cool
This link is for a UK company, and it gives a rough Idea of what You get for your money (have to convert to dollars by multiplying by 1.8)
www.sjonescontainers.co.uk/saleshire.htm
I expect they'll be listed under Shipping services or Shipping Containers in your Yellow Pages And they'll situated on the Docks or a freight yard
PS Some I have seen have motion alarms fitted

Theft is a problem, a growing problem in the USA. Construction Companies around here are hiring security (patrolling) and have trailer trucks (I guess shipping containers) on site.

Further they are timing shipment of materials much more accurately to the point where they know how much (example) drywall they will use that day and only have a day's supply of drywall arrive that morning.

Tools, heavy equipment are now being targeted around here.

Security cameras won’t do anything for you – you might get a decent enough image of the suspect to get an arrest – might – but you have to understand that these thefts take place at night and the thieves dress in black and are usually not going to shine a flashlight in their own faces for the camera to pick up a decent image. Even night vision equipment isn’t that good. The Theory of Surveillance Equipment is mostly a deterrent that mostly doesn’t work since would be thieves know to hide their faces. In the situation you have going on it will just be the cameras and the thieves.

In some of the construction sites I have seen RVs (Motor homes, 5th wheels) where somebody actually lives on site. Down the road a piece were they finished the wall and gate (near future gated community) along with the RV there is a pack of dogs (5-6) that roam free at night.

I bet if you locked up a couple of rottweilers in the house with signs “Guard Dogs on Duty” that theft would go down - that only works if they are barkers – they need to be the kind that bark at anything thus are heard and known to be their by any would be thieves.

Dvd,

Security cameras can be very effective, particularly when they are monitored remotely.

My company specializes in this application and we've proven to be effective.

The problem we have is with vandalism, were they run up throw a rock through the window and run. Because by the time we get the police they are long gone........

The lawyers talked me out of tower mounted remotely controlled rifles, sorry Wink
