Okay---so maybe I'm old and out of it (50), but what's the rule on stockings with sandals? I have a wonderful pair of black strappy sandals kind of satiny---definitely dressy. I bought them to wear to a wedding with a little black evening dress (short---but not above the knee). I bought a pair of off-black pantihose to wear with them (sandalfoot). My daughters freaked out. They said that under no circumstances are you to wear hose with sandals. It's October for goodness sake. I can't go bare legged to a formal affair, nor would I even want to. I think hose make the outfit. Bare legs are for shorts, crop pants, short summer skirts aren't they? Anyway, why do they make sandalfoot hose if not to wear with sandals? What's the final word on this issue? The wedding is next Saturday and I might have to go out and buy new shoes. Thanks.

I don't know what the 'rule' is, but I opt for wearing the hose with the sandals. I think it would look fine either way, really, but for me, specifically, my feet and toes are so incredibly ugly that I would most definitely cover them up. Big Grin

A pair of stockings that are the color of you own skin tones would be nice.

The outfit you describe sounds attractive, but I think it would be more of a "night on the town" style with the black stockings.

Personally, if I felt that I must wear hose, I'd wear a closed toe shoe. If I really wanted to wear the sandals, I'd get a pedicure and go without the hose. The point of the strappy open sandals is to have the "nude" look and you can't have that when you have your toesies all covered up in a pair of hose - and even if you're wearing the "sandal toe" hose, you still have that seam that shows.

If you are set on wearing both the sandals and the hose...best to go with a nude color, just so it doesn't call attention to the fact that you're wearing any. It's not as if a pair of hose are going to keep you warm anyway...

The old fashion etiquette...aka Miss Emily...would state that a lady never wore a dress without hose; whether you were wearing shoes or strappy sandles. Of course it also stated that you should never wear a black dress to a wedding. However, modern etiquette pretty much follows no rules. In fact, most think hose with sandles is totally ludicrous. So basically you do what feels comfortable for you. Hose always makes the legs look more attractive so if you feel more secure going that route, I echo everyone else's sentiments and suggest going with nude.

I think that stockings are fine with open-toed sandals, as long as they are "sandalfoot" stockings (i.e. no extras fabric on the toe and heel!). However, I don't know where you live but I think it's getting a little late in the year for open-toed anything... But that's just me.

I think that stockings are OK with sandals, especially dressy sandals. Smile
As for open-toed shoes, we're setting record highs in the 80'sF on the Gulf Coast today - open ANYTHING is not only acceptable, but practically mandatory! Red Face

It is presently 8 degrees here, so I can only dream of wearing open anything!

It's fine to wear hose with dressy sandals, and you should never go bare-legged to a wedding. Weddings are dressy occasions and bare would be tacky etiquette.

Okay CRAP CRAP CRAP. My mother just bought me new 'spensive stockings (yes, my mommy still buys me stuff!) and I wore them today (with closed-toe shoes or I'd've been frost-bit!) and by the end of the day each big toe was poking through a brand new hole in the stockings!! RAAARRRRGGGG. And it's not like I have claws for toenails or anything! Rrrgghhh.
I am mad.
I have vented.
I am done now.
Thank you.

Join the crowd Elexina...I wore brand new tights yesterday and in the process of crossing my legs caught the tights on the zipper of my boots and ripped a huge hole in them which promptly ran in both directions! And I deliberatly wear tights instead of hose because they don't run. See if I ever try to save a couple of bucks by buying a cheaper brand...Had to go out at lunchtime and buy the good ones! Geesh...
