I'm going on a trip to Boston tomorrow morning with Voices (the school honour chorus) and the orchestra. We are supposed to bring something really nice to wear. I have a new silk dress that I just got last weekend, but it has a wrinkle down the front and will get wrinkled on the trip there.

My questions:
Can I iron silk? Any precautions I should take? The dress is dry clean only.

Is there a way I can pack the dress so it is at less risk of wrinkling more? I cannot bring it on a hanger, we are allowed one bag only.

Sometimes yes, sometimes no...also would depend on the heat of the iron. Since you really don't want to risk it, what I would suggest is to set the iron very hot, BUT don't iron directly onto the dress. Place a towel (not too thick...a dish towel would be about right) over the dress and iron in sections with the towel over the dress. You could even dampen the towel so that the moisture helps to iron out the wrinkles.

For packing...fold the sleeves in and then try rolling the dress rather than folding it in half...so as not to get more "creases". You'll still get some wrinkles, but not hard creases.

My daughter bought a silk dress for Prom. The saleslady said to iron it on a medium heat (my iron has a setting for silk, which I used), no steam, and to turn it inside-out to iron it.
If you're concerned, using a dish-towel as a buffer won't hurt.
