Can anyone tell us when the current extended "Y" fork design of goal post came into use? and did it replace the Rugby type H goal post ?

One site, but certainly not an authoritative source, indicates that the "single standard" goalpost was required by the National Football League in 1967. Indeed, the "H-style" goalposts were used previously. The change was made as a safety matter.

Many sites suggest that the posts were moved from the goal line to the end line in 1974, another safety maneuver that pleased all but place kickers.

Anyone with more definitive information please fire away!
