Very likely, DG. High lead contents were found in his hair at the time, during his post mortem (much more recently, in his bones).
However, methinks that perchance, the copious amounts of red wine which he imbibed in The White Swan in Vienna did not do his liver a great deal of good either...where is Prothero when you want him...? He is our Beethoven expert!
