The great soprano died last night. Though a non-smoker, the cause was lung cancer. Over 35 years ago I went to the NYC Opera's performance of Verdi's Un ballo in maschera in Los Angeles. The NYCO was really the orphan company compared to the Met, and operated on a shoe string. So in the final scene, the masked ball, who is standing there in the chorus? The prima donna herself. I had always respected her as a singer before, but this really made me realize what a wonderful artist she was.
