I have a 12 year old Boston Terrior, who has bladder problems. He is kinda ruining my carpet. I have shampooed it several times, I spray air fresheners on it, still smells. I can't afford to replace it right now. Does anyone have any ideas on how to get the smell out. I guess if I had to I could live with the stains but I can't stand the smell. I guess if there was a miracle cleaner out there carpet stores would go out of business but.... if anyone has ideas it would be greatly appreciated. Love my puppers, can't quite put him to sleep yet, so I live with it.
I'm afraid that your carpet is probably ruined. If you have a hardwood floor underneath, get rid of the carpet and clean up as the dog messes. If not, I wouldn't be in any rush to replace the carpet with a dog with urinary problems just yet anyway. The vet may be able to give you something to help with this. I would check on that. You may want to baby gate the dog to the kitchen so you can more easily clean up unless you are going to be with the dog.
I have had good luck with Pine Sol (if you can stand the smell of the pine forest!) and water solution. I would recommend getting one of those Little Green Machines or using a shop vac to pull the urine first. Then saturate the area with the cleaning solution pulling it back out of the carpet.
The Little Green Machine is about $50 on sale. It is small enough to be stored easily. You will find that it comes in handy for all kinds of upholstery and carpet tasks.
Becca: Wildflower is very right about the Green Machine, Bissell makes them. If you have a new puppy or and older one with problems you'll love this machine. It will get stains and odor out. You can buy the cleaner that Bissell makes for it or you can use Simple Green, that works well too. Get the one with the heater and power brush. Costs a little more but really does the job.

Or, if you don't want to put out the money for that, scrub out the spot (immediately!) with a little Cascade and rinse with vinegar and water. That will take the smell out. Don't forget, dog urine will kill trees and peel the chrome off a trailer hitch, so don't delay!
Catty (whose dog has learned better THANK GOD!)
