Does anyone know of a cheap tried remedy to get rid of fleas? Something natural. That Frontline is expensive with all our dogs and cat!

Add garlic powder or granulated garlic to their food. When you bathe them, rub granulated garlic into their coat. Really.

That works? Garlic powder as in the spice, like garlic salt? How much do you add? Dogs will eat this, with the smell? I have 4 dogs who eat out of the same bowl, and a cat, but she has her own dish and is about 8 months now.

Yes, the spice. Don't use garlic salt; it's 80% salt and 20% garlic. Bad for them and an expensive way to buy garlic. I just put a lot on my dogs' food, and rubbed it in their coats after baths. I also sprinkled about 2 little jars around the yard. We had a bad flea infestation and it worked.

Cool! Do you also rub the garlic powder into their coats? Do you have to bathe them first, or can you put it into their dry coats? Does it work w/o the bathing part!?

Also, buy some borax and sprinkle it on your carpets. The fleas will eat it and explode. It's gross and cool all at the same time. And cut up a couple of flea collars and put them in your vacuum cleaner, too.

With the garlic solution, you'll also keep the vampire dog away.

Feed brewer's yeast (also called "nutritional yeast")- just sprinkle it on the food (mash it in a bit if you use wet food)- there's no really set amount, but half a teaspoon each for really little guys up to a tablespoon for big dogs each day is usually effective. (It's safe for the kitty, too.)
Or ask at the pet store if they stock treats or a pet food that has brewer's yeast in in.

Fleas hate the smell of all that vitamin B, and it's good for your dog.

Thanks all! I think I will try the brewers yeast. But, will a cat eat those? I remember seeing them in pill form...

Don't use the pills, get the powder at the health food store or get treats at the pet store- pills are generally more trauma than it's worth and the powder is usually fresher... cats will usually eat it just sprinkled on their food, but for some, it's best to put it in a treat like a bit of wet food or tuna juice.

I remember my Mom's dog ate the pills as a treat! I could always crush them for our kitty. I'll figure something out that will work for my dogs. I hear a lot of dogs do like the yeast pills, but if the powder is fresher, maybe I will go with that!

Dogs are usually fine with any kind of pill, especially if you spread peanut butter on it. Cats, though... yeah, I'd definitely go with a powder form 'cause yikes.
