Hi! smile My dog, a Sheltie, has bad allergy problems. He has allergy medicine that he takes. I have medicated shampoo for him. His skin has allergy sores. They scab up, and the fur comes out of those areas too easily. I don't know what to do for him. He gets itchy, too. Does anyone have any suggestions?
The medicine helps his other allergy symptoms. I just don't know what to do to make the skin problem go away. These areas I've talked about are basically raw areas. They're not bald, but, they do lose fur easily. The are all over. There are a couple on his back, and several on his underside. His ears get little ones, too.
Can anyone please help? It would be greatly appreciated. smile

It's a tough call because there are so many different things that can cause allergies in dogs (because it's showing itself in the skin, DOES not mean it is a skin allergy).

Some of the things could be:
Diet
drugs
vaccinations
environment
and on...

Without knowing what the dog is allergic to it's hard to make any kind of a recommendation. I would though, like to make a suggestion. I recommend this book to everyone with an animal (and no, I do not know the author or the publisher LOL).

Title: Dr. Pitcairn's Complete Guide to Natural Health for Dogs and Cats. It's written by Richard H. Pitcairn, DVM, PHD and Susan Hubble Pitcairn.

There is a section in there on allergies and several sections that discuss skin allergies (and their root causes). There are special diets and also a recommended regime to try to identify the cause itself. Buy the book or check it out at the library - and check out the section on allergies.....
some great suggestions in there.

I don't know about your dog or not but I do know that a lot of Shar Peis are allergic to soy bean. I had a dog that I had to switch to soy bean less food. I also supplemented his diet with vitamin e until his skin cleared up. You can buy vitamin e over the counter or you can buy sunflower oil and give your dog some of this. Try it. It really helps. I used to be a dog groomer and I had a lot of customers who's dog at some time or another would get skin problems and I would suggest this and they would try it and most had a lot of improvement. The vets don't agree it will help but I've seen the results.
