My new 3 1/2 month old pug has kennel cough and coccidia. The vet has prescribed numerous medications but the cough has seemed to get worse. Anyone have any experience with kennel cough or coccidia?

I've never had to deal with Kennel Cough but I had a Pom puppy that had Coccidia.

Coccidia is a parasitic disease of the intestinal tract caused by microscopic organisims called Coccidia. The disease spreads from one animal to another by contact with infected feces. (Pregnant females can also pass it on to her pups). It causes bloody diahrea. It's very hard to get rid of. We had to go through several courses of meds to get rid of it. The eggs can live in the ground for years. So it's important to clean up the area where your pup goes potty and not use that area again once the pup has been treated. You also need to clean all food bowls and bedding daily until after treatment.

I'm not an expert, but my dog had kennel cough. It's just a cough, not particularly serious. On advice from a dog trainer and (by phone) a vet, I gave him a child's dose of human cough medicine. No use giving the brand name since I'm in England. Check first, as not all are suitable, and for a small dog perhaps use half the child's dose. Mine's a golden retriever and fortunately he loved the taste. The cough sounded terrible but was gone in a week. I moistened his normally dry food, because his throat must have been sore.

The coccidia sounds the more serious of the two. Hope the little fellow's soon better.

Kennel cough is horrible! It's nothing life threatning, however is hard on the dog and the human as well.
I don't know why they give medication for it. The meds don't work for kennel cough. It has to run it's course, and can last for months.
Please try and remember that when you have a really bad cough for awhile, and it makes your ribs hurt to cough, that that is what your dog is feeling too. A nice rib and stomach massage for him will help. Plus helping them relax helps the cough as well.
And be careful, kennel cough is VERY contagious to other dogs.

Poor puppy. We had a beagle puppy that had cocci. as a puppy. We were advised to not feed her dry dog food for a long time. I don't remember how long. We fed her cottage cheese, canned dog food, and meat until her tummy completely recovered and I'm sure for a while past that. I have heard about using cough syrup too for the cough. Ask your vet about it and good luck.

There are things in cough syrups and human meds that can be deadly for animals.
Also, cottage cheese is probably not a good idea. Dairy is definately not good for dogs. eek

Thank you all so much for the info. Too bad my vet did not give me so much. He did NOT tell me about changing his bedding and cleaning up the area where he poops very well, etc. I have four cats that I am sure are going to get it. Anyway to prevent them from getting it? eek

The medicine has not helped the Kennel Cough because what they give is antibiotics and it's useless because the disease is viral, not bacterial. Cough medicine can have some use, but they can also have side effects. One of the most effective things you can do is to put the dog into a bathroom with a tubfull of hot water (so it's steamy) or into the room just after a hot shower. The disease pretty much does have to run its course - but it's typically only about 2 or 3 weeks. Keep an eye on your kitties - it is possible for the virus to affect you and them.

Another thing you could give him is Vitamin C - just like with humans, it does aid in the immune function. You can add vitamin C powder to his food daily (even when he is well - to keep him that way!)

My dog's coccidia bout has gotten better, I am still treating him with Albon however, as I said my Himalayans got it! Knew they would. And his kennel cough is tappering off.

I am now treating the cats and dog with Albon and mopping everyday. eek
